How Landowners Can Support Bee Populations

How Landowners Can Support Bee Populations (And Why It Matters)

If you own land—whether it’s a backyard, a few acres, or a working farm—you have the power to make a meaningful difference for honey bees and native pollinators. These tiny but mighty creatures play a huge role in our ecosystems and food systems. And the best part? What’s good for bees is usually great for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife too.

Here’s how you can help:

🌼 1. Plant a Variety of Flowers (Especially Natives!)

Bees love blooms! The more flower diversity you can offer, the better. Native wildflowers are especially valuable, as they’ve evolved with local bee species and offer the best nectar and pollen.

💡 Tip: Aim to have something blooming from early spring through late fall. Bees need food the entire season!

🚫 2. Reduce or Eliminate Chemical Use

Many common herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides are harmful to pollinators—even in small doses. If you must treat something, do it responsibly.

🐝 Bee-friendly tip: Avoid spraying when flowers are blooming or when bees are actively foraging (usually mid-morning to mid-afternoon).

🌳 3. Preserve Wild Spaces

Ditch the urge to mow everything! Areas with native grasses, flowering weeds, or even a pile of brush can offer essential habitat for bees and other beneficial insects. Solitary bees often nest in bare soil or hollow stems—keeping some “messy” areas can be a huge help.

💧 4. Provide Water

Bees get thirsty too! A shallow water source like a birdbath with stones or floating corks for perching is a simple way to support your local pollinators.

🐝 5. Support Local Beekeepers

Renting hives or allowing local beekeepers to place bees on your land is a win-win. You help boost pollination, and they get a safe place for their bees to thrive. Plus, you might get a sweet little honey harvest in return.

🌿 6. Think Beyond Bees

Creating a pollinator-friendly space isn’t just about honey bees. Monarchs, hummingbirds, moths, bats, beetles, and other creatures benefit from the same healthy environments. When you support bees, you’re supporting a whole ecosystem.

👣 Start Small, Grow Big

Whether you’re managing a few acres or just planting a new flower bed, every effort counts. Bees (and your local wildlife) will thank you.
